MicroMeeting Getting out: protein traffic in prokaryotes

Protein secretion systems in prokaryotes are increasingly shifting from being considered as experimental models for ‘more complex’ processes (i.e. eukaryotes) to being a major source of key biological questions in their own right. The pathways by which proteins move between compartments or insert into membranes in prokaryotic cells are certainly less numerous than in eukaryotes (though not dram...

CRISPR-Cas: the effective immune systems in the prokaryotes

Approximately all sequenced archaeal and half of eubacterial genomes have some sort of adaptive immune system, which enables them to target and cleave invading foreign genetic elements by an RNAi-like pathway. CRISPR–Cas (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats–CRISPR-associated proteins) systems consist of the CRISPR loci with multiple copies of a short repeat sequence separa...

Disulfide bond isomerization in prokaryotes.

Proteins with multiple cysteine residues often require disulfide isomerization reactions before they attain their correct conformation. In prokaryotes this reaction is catalyzed mainly by DsbC, a protein that shares many similarities in structure and mechanism to the eukaryotic protein disulfide isomerase. This review discusses the current knowledge about disulfide isomerization in prokaryotes.

Sequences and evolutionary analyses of eukaryotic-type protein kinases from Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2).

Four eukaryotic-type protein serine/threonine kinases from Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) were cloned and sequenced. To explore evolutionary relationships between these and other protein kinases, the distribution of protein serine/threonine kinase genes in prokaryotes was examined with the TFASTA program. Genes of this type were detected in only a few species of prokaryotes and their distributio...

Comparing function and structure between entire proteomes.

More than 30 organisms have been sequenced entirely. Here, we applied a variety of simple bioinformatics tools to analyze 29 proteomes for representatives from all three kingdoms: eukaryotes, prokaryotes, and archaebacteria. We confirmed that eukaryotes have relatively more long proteins than prokaryotes and archaes, and that the overall amino acid composition is similar among the three. We pre...
